Kmart Changes It Up: The Fall 2010 Apparel Collection

I don't know about you but I have not stepped into a Kmart in eons. Target took over for me in the budget fashion world and it was all I needed. But once I saw Kmart's new fall fashion line, my thinking quickly changed. Kmart's Design Team has completely revamped what the store has to offer--and let me tell you it's for the better!

The new line features current trends such as a military-inspired jacket, distressed denim and a skinny cargo pant. See more pictures from the line after the jump!

Doesn't everything just look fabulous? I love it and cannot wait to try the clothes out for myself. I highly suggest you check out their website and get a taste of everything that goes on behind the scenes, and how the line came about.

Gabi Gregg: MTV's First Ever TJ

This post is all about dreams coming true. And when I tell you your dreams can really come true, I mean it! Pictured above with Sway is my gal pal Gabi Gregg, awesome Editor of the influential fashion blog, Young, Fat and Fabulous.

Sunday night, Live on MTV, Gabi became MTV's first ever TJ (or Twitter Jockey). She knocked out her other 4 competitors left and right just like I knew she would. I am truly, so excited for her!

I first met Gabi through mutual friends here in Chicago earlier this year and from the moment I did, I was in love with her. She's just that type of person. An inspiration, a dream chaser/go-getter, and it doesn't hurt that she's absolutely adorable as well does it?

I cannot wait to see what other awesome things Gabi does in her new position as a TJ and beyond. Having a plus-size, bi-racial woman represent MTV is a double-POW! in my eyes and I'm glad it is what young girls will now see when they look at Gabi.

Gabi congratulations and I know you are going to knock it out of the park!

Summertime in Chicago is officially kicking off next week with Memorial Day weekend and there's a lot going on. A couple of organizations are having events, and have chosen The Red Pump Project to be beneficiaries of a portion of funds raised. 5 events happening in the next week in the Chicagoland area will be benefiting Red Pump, so get ready to plan your schedules!

First up, Sex and The City 2 Event Series: Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda hit the big screen in less than a week. In preparation for the Sex and The City 2 theatrical release on May 27th, Diamonds and Lace EventScaping has planned the perfect set of events to bring the essence of Sex and The City here. The company has planned four events here in Chicago to occur between Wednesday, May 26th, and Sunday, May 30th, with a percent of the proceeds going to The Red Pump Project. "A Fine Day of Beauty" with Sam Fine Recap

A few weeks ago I had the fabulous opportunity to attend a workshop hosted by celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine (pictured above with myself and Patrice of Afrobella). It was a fantastic day and I was just squealing with excitement from it all. Mr. Fine wasted no time schooling us on the best way to apply makeup, giving us countless tips and tricks, and debunking all types of makeup myths. He is so very nice and down to earth and I had a great time learning from him.

The Sassy Peach Rents the Runway - Pt. II

Hi Sassy Peach readers, please forgive me for posting part II of The Sassy Peach Rents the Runway, so late, I do apologize. If you are reading this and have not yet read part I, please do so!

Where were we? Oh! Yes, so I tried on the dress and it fit perfectly as you can see in the pic above. It came in a RTR garment bag that I can keep as well as a "fit kit" which I sadly lost in the abyss of backstage at the fashion show. I'm sure I can get another one though. Anyway, I paired the lovely Mark & James by Badgley Mischka dress with my red pumps no less and the ensemble was complete!

I enjoyed the dress so much I didn't want to see it go, but knew I had to return it in time. As I sadly packed both dresses in the RTR-addressed envelope (that they so conveniently provide), I began daydreaming about all of the rentals to come. I cannot wait!

Overall my experience with Rent the Runway was positive and I highly recommend you try it at least once. And now you can rent accessories as well for as low as $10! Already contemplating what I will wear for my birthday this August...

The Sassy Peach Rents the Runway - Pt. I

If you have not heard of Rent the Runway, here is your chance to get a first-hand account of my experience. I am sure you all remember that fabulous Rock the Red fashion show I so fabulously styled last month, but there was one more person to style--ME! In all of the fury & work on the show I almost forgot about finding something to wear. Luckily, the light bulb went off over my head & I remembered hearing about Rent the Runway.

Rent the Runway is basically the Netflix of designer dresses. You go to their website, select a dress that you like that is available in your size & order it to be rented! Prices range from a $50 rental to upwards of $300. Being a fashionista-on-a-budget, I opted to stay in the $50-75 range. Time was unfortunately working against me so I had to make a quick decision & finally decided on a white, puff sleeve Mark & James by Badgley Mischka dress. I wasn't sure what size would be best but lucky for me (& you!) RTR lets you rent an additional size at no charge!

So fast forward past my obsession with a dress that was not available when I needed it & RTR's awesome online chat assistance to the day of the show & the arrival of my dress. It was delivered to my apartment with no problem & right when I needed it. Tried on the first dress & it fit perfectly! The.....rats! Looks like we're out of time.

"Rock the Red" Recap

Hey SP readers! I'm finally back & ready to get back to doing some great things here. First up is my recap from the "Rock the Red" fashion show I styled last Thursday night. It was a great success & I really enjoyed working with everyone I did, especially my partner the whole way through, Brittany of Black is Breezie. We had some fantastic clothing & accessory designers & boutiques, that I will tell you guys all about in the coming days.

Not only was there a fashion show, but The Red Pump Project celebrated its 1st birthday & also honored Emmy award winning HIV/AIDS activist Rae Lewis-Thornton. This woman is straight up a phenomenal woman, as well as Luvvie & Karyn (co-creators of TRPP). Rae was presented with the "Ultimate Red Pump Rocker" award (see pics above) for all of her hard work & dedication she gives in all that she does.

The event is from 6:00-9:00pm at Bottom Lounge on 1375 W. Lake St. Not only will designs by local designers & boutiques be showcased, but Emmy award winning HIV/AIDS activist Rae Lewis-Thornton will also be honored with a "Living Legacy" award.

Spring 2010 is all about the return of the Girlie-Girl. The in-your-face technicolors & aggressive shoes of the last few seasons have given way to super-femme ruffles, pretty pastels & diplomatic neutrals. But this girl’s no pushover – razor sharp edge abounds with cut-outs, military details, & leather.

2. How can women at any age wear these hot spring trends?

Forget age & focus on fit – & I’m not talking about size here. If it doesn’t fit your personal style, leave room for interpretation of the trend. Par example, flirty floral dresses in micro-mini lengths may be in, but they may not be your best look. It’s okay to go for a hem that you’re more comfortable with.

3. What is one spring trend that is worth the splurge?

Definitely a pair of outrageously perfect wedge heel sandals.

4. How can women make over last season’s look for under $50? Under $100?

Invest in one or two key pieces – I’d recommend a lightweight leather skirt & wedge heel sandals -- then rock it with your fave closet picks e.g. By day, wear your leather with a broken in tee, cropped blazer & your everyday shoes. For some extra trend cred throw a cheapie vintage military pin on the jacket. By night, polish up with your wedges & a sequin tank.

Chicago Designer Chosen as Oscars Design Challenge Finalist

Chicago couture designer, Elda De La Rosa is one of nine designers chosen as a finalist in the Oscars Designer Challenge 2010. One designer will have their original gown worn by one of the Awards escorts as she brings the statuettes onto the stage during the Academy Awards this Sunday, March 7th.

The gown by De La Rosa titled Lucero (meaning 'shining star' in Spanish), is bluish/gold in color & made of iridescent, silk taffeta &, like the entire 2010 Alta Gracia Collection, inspired by the strong, yet beautiful & feminine women who have influenced De La Rosa's life. Specifically, she tapped into the classic, tailored, vintage look of the 40s, where structure met femininity. The Sassy Peach Visits the New Marc Jacobs Chicago

Today I stopped by the new Marc Jacobs Collection store located in the Gold Coast. The atmosphere was very upbeat & full of excitement & glasses of champagne. President of MJ Robert Duffy was on hand speaking to everyone & doing interviews.

My favorite part of the 3,000-square-foot store had to be the chandelier above the cash register that looked like delicate blown glass fixtures. Friendly staff buzzed around taking care of customers & handing out awesome gift bags. I enjoyed my time at the store & suggest you go check it out if you are in the area.

To all my fashionable Chicago ladies & gents, a new Marc Jacobs store will be opening here on Thursday, February 25th. The new store is located in the luxurious Elysian Hotel at 11 E. Walton St. This will "marc" Jacobs' second foray into the city of Chicago, the first being the Marc by Marc Jacobs boutique in Wicker Park at 1714 N. Damen. This seems like the perfect place for a new MJ footprint & I cannot wait to lay my eyes on it.

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen (1969-2010)

It is with great sadness that I report beloved & fearless designer, Alexander McQueen, is dead at the age of 40. WWD reported early this morning that McQueen was found dead in his London apartment of an apparent suicide. I am truly saddened & disturbed by this news, as is the entire fashion industry. Today marks the official start of New York Fashion Week and McQueen's presentation was set for today at 3pm, but of course has since been canceled.

Prayers to McQueen's family, friends, team & employees. The industry has lost a great & he will truly be missed.

One of my shopping haunts American Apparel now has a newly launched nail polish collection, featuring 18 colors & is DBP, toluene and formaldehyde-free. Per PR Newswire, each of the 18 colors are inspired by important facets of American Apparel. For example, the Factory Grey shade is the actual shade used to paint all floors of the company’s manufacturing operations, & the Office shade was matched to the color of an accounting notepad found on the seventh floor of American Apparel’s headquarters. Kinda cool, huh?

A girl can never have too many nail polish choices right? I might have to try it out & tell you all what I think. American Apparel Nail Lacquer is $6 per bottle & is also available in a 3-pack for $15. You can find them at all American Apparel stores & online.

Zac Posen to Design for Target

According to WWD, Target has announced that they have tapped Zac Posen to be the next designer of their limited edition Go International series. Specific price points of the merchandise have not yet been determined but Posen's own designs retail from $900 to $12,000, & sometimes even higher. This collection for Target will give the mass market a fair shot at having something designed by the man himself without spending their entire savings. I'm definitely looking forward to what he comes up with for the collection.

The Zac Posen for Target Go International collection will be available next spring, April 25th through May 30th at Target stores & on Target.com. I'll be sure to post updates once more information becomes available.

Zara Store Opening Re-Cap

Last night I had the opportunity to check out Zara's Michigan Avenue opening, & I must say it did not disappoint. Fashionistas & fashionistos of all kinds flocked to rainy-night soiree to see all the Spanish retailer had to offer. Guests were greeted by bars stocked full with champagne & wine, passed hors d'oeuvres, & a DJ spinning chest-pounding beats--the perfect recipe for a great party.

As I made my way around the 3-story store I noticed a lot of coats, jackets, sweaters & boots, boots & more boots. I just about wanted every single piece of footwear in there! If you are in need of classy, on-trend, sophisticted clothing, this is the place to go. The prices are a bit higher than H&M, but I still think it's worth it. Most of the coats & boots I saw were priced at about $129 or $179, so do keep that in mind.

Because of all the fabulous pieces I got re-inspired to really start pushing for Sassy Peach Styling & Fashion Consulting again! I did some daydreaming & imagined bringing clients there to find great stuff to add to their wardrobes...ahhh! But I digress. The bottom line is if you live in Chicago & have yet to experience all that is Zara please go!

Fashion's Night Out to Return Next Year!

As I'm sure you may have already heard Fashion's Night Out is returning next year. I am very excited about this news because I was at the very first FNO & had such a good time while I was in New York for Fashion Week.

The plan for next year is to make FNO even bigger & better than the last, by implementing a sales tax-free night. (Keeping my fingers crossed on that!)

Dozens of celebrities came out to participate in FNO last month including Arlenis Sosa (whom I met), Diddy, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen, Rihanna, Andre Leon Talley, Anna Wintour & many, many more.

Hey Chicago fashionistas! In case you haven't heard uber fab store Zara is opening this Friday (10/30) on Michigan Ave!

I am so excited about this as I am a huge Zara fan. If you're not familiar with the store, I would describe it as H&M on steroids. Simply fantastic!

Tomorrow evening is their grand opening party & I will def be there. Unfortunately the RSVP list is closed, so if you're not on it you'll miss out. But no worries TSP to the rescue to fill you in on all the fun!

SLFW: Bolongaro Trevor at Bakers Presents Emerge

My absolute favorite show of STLFW was Bolongaro Trevor's SS10 collection. The British label was the finale of Friday evening & in my eyes was well worth the wait. Models cascaded down the runway in distressed jean jackets, diamond & studded shorts & gorgeous dresses. The them showcased their British heritage with faded British flag prints & men's blazers in the iconic blue, red & white print. I also enjoyed the styling with big, statement chain link necklaces & heels & booties worn with socks as an unexpected, but refreshing sight.

Bolongaro Trevor has a long list of celebrity fans which include models Agyness Deyn, & Daisy Lowe, & Peaches Geldof, Pete Doherty & Courtney Love. The line is stocked in over 100 stores worldwide including Selfridges London, Atrium New York, & Fred Segal Los Angeles. I am definitely now a fan!

New York-based fashion line Love Brigade raised the bar with their show on Friday night. Their ready-to-wear men's & women's looks met the gazes of fashionable on-lookers & did not disappoint.

I could see myself wearing just about everything in the women's collection. The laid back tees & dark denim were right up my alley for easy, breezy style.

Saint Louis Fashion Week: TRIM at Bakers Presents Emerge

Hey SP readers! I know I've been away far too long & I apologize. Just had some major re-structuring to do with my life & responsibilities, but now I'm back! In case you didn't know I had the opportunity to go to my hometown for Spring/Summer 2010 Saint Louis Fashion Week!

It was my very first STLFW so I wasn't sure what to expect, but for some reason I knew it was going to be great anyway, & it really was. The first show I took in was by TRIM (trimindustries.com), a line inspired by hot rods, Americana & road trips--sort of rocker-chic.

Greased-up guys & girls flew down the runway, with 1 model swinging a metal chain as he walked down the runway, sleeve tattoos & all. It was definitely a line full of all-American, edgy styles.

I am so very excited about this especially on the heels of the Jimmy Choo collab. NYFW: Backstage at Vivienne Tam S/S 2010

For Vivienne Tam's spring/summer 2010 show, Gina Brooke of Shu Ueumura, created a 1960s look that was inspired by butterflies and freedom.

Models faces were kept clean and refreshed looking with very heavy lashes applied to both top and bottom eyelashes. The lips and cheeks were given a soft pink color to pull the entire look together. This was definitely one of my favorite makeup looks from this season's shows.

NYFW: Vivienne Tam Spring 2010

The theme of Vivienne Tam's spring 2010 runway show was "Butterfly Lovers," which is the Chinese "Romeo & Juliet." In the story the 2 lovers transform into butterflies to live happily ever after together.

Tam's designs included dresses with butterfly cutouts & colorful close-up prints of butterflies. The show had a 70s/hippie vibe with fringed belts & handbags. She also chose to debut her new collaboration with HP & some of the models carried her new HP x Vivienne Tam clutch that I am dying for.

I loved the colors she chose for her garments. You can do no wrong with implementing purples, yellows, & greens with earth tone colors. It was a beautiful collection & I look forward to seeing similar styles in the stores for all of us to rock next spring.

NYFW: Backstage at Christian Siriano S/S 2010

While attending fashion week this fall, I had the opportunity to go backstage where all of the magic happens that graces the runway. Christian Siriano's show featured makeup by Victoria's Secret Beauty. The theme by makeup artist Polly Osmond was Cleopatra mixed with a modern goddess. She explained, "We wanted an Egyptian feel without being too literal."

Faces were kept mostly clean and were lightly contoured with VS Goddess Bronzer. VS Very Sexy Silky Eyeshadow in "Champagne" was used on the upper lids, along with Very Sexy Eyeliner in "Black Velvet" on the bottom lids. Black mascara was also applied on the top lashes only.

Last night I attended the Rachel Roy event at Macy's on State St. in Chicago & it turned out to be a really great event. The woman of the hour arrived at about 6:30p & spoke with any & everyone who wanted to chat it up with her. As shown in the picture above, models showcased clothing from her newest Rachel Rachel Roy collection, sold exclusively at Macy's.

The Sassy Peach had the opportunity to do a mini-interview with the lovely Rachel! Read what she had to say after the jump!

TSP: What was your inspiration for creating the Rachel Rachel Roy line?

Rachel: I just wanted to create something that was accessible to everyone. I was once the girl who could not always afford the high-end clothing, so that is who I created this line for. I respect the consumer so I chose to create something of great quality, great fabrics & something fun. I definitely wanted to respect the consumer as well.

TSP: What are 3 staple pieces would you say every woman should have in her closet?

Rachel: 1 - A trench. It's something you can throw on & look & pulled together in. 2 - A boyfriend blazer. One with a great lining always looks good, roll up the sleeves to show it off. And 3 - A cardigan. Temperatures change from inside & outside, so it's a great staple to have.

TSP: What are some of your favorite trends currently happening in fashion?

Rachel: I love the feminine/androgynous look that's happening right now. I also just did it in my spring 2010 line! I like the lines & fit of a jacket with square shoulders. You have to pay attention to the shoulder area & make sure it's flattering to the body type, but I think it's a great style.

I chatted a bit more with Rachel & really enjoyed it. She was very gracious & happy to do the interview. I urge you if you have not already to check out her collection. I absolutely love it & have purchased a few pieces to add to my closet. It's available at Macy's stores & on her website rachelroy.com.

In case you hadn't heard filming for Sex and the City II began filming in Upper Manhattan yesterday in New York. Sarah Jessica Parker as fab character "Carrie Bradshaw" was spotted rockin' a white Halston dress, with glitzy gold Christian Louboutin heels, & a Chanel handbag. Love, love, love! Especially those Louboutin's--I die like Rachel Zoe!

The movie officially hits theaters in May 2010 just like the first one last May. I'm so excited!

We have now learned that Ri Ri does in fact have a spread in the September issue of Italian Vogue--but it's in the couture supplement that comes out every year, not the actual magazine itself. The editorial is shot by Steven Klein & as seen above she rocks an amazing Valentino dress. I'm very excited to see more!

So today The Sassy Peach is 1 year old! I almost can't believe that a year has gone by already. It's been a lot of work, ups & downs, but all in all a fun, learning experience. I've met some fantastic people along the way & have had some amazing opportunities come my way. If you haven't been with throughout the whole year then you may not know that my Mom was my inspiration for creating The Sassy Peach. It's also her birthday so I'm celebrating her life as well.

The fab folks over at Pattern People created 2 tote bags exclusively for Hint Mag. One features Karl Lagerfeld & the other Marc Jacobs. I love the totes--so cute! I actually think the Karl one looks most like him, not too fond of the Marc one though, think they could have done a better job.

In Honor of: Supermodel Naomi Sims

Today we found out that supermodel Naomi Sims passed away at the age of 61 after battling cancer. Often referred to as the first black supermodel, Sims was the first black model to appear on the cover of Ladies' Home Journal in November 1968.

In 1974 designer Halston stated, "Naomi was the first, she was the great ambassador for all black people. She broke down all the social barriers. "

After appearing on the covers of Essence, Life, & Cosmopolitan magazines, she became an entrepreneur & started what would become a multi-million dollar wig business in 1973. She also expanded into fragrance, beauty, & cosmetics & penned books on beauty including: All About Health & Beauty for the Black Woman, How to Be a Top Model, & All About Success for the Black Woman.

Images of Sims are currently on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "The Model As Muse" exhibition. The curators Harold Koda & Kohle Yohannan wrote, “The beautifully contoured symmetry of Sims’s face and the lithe suppleness of her body presented on the once-exclusionary pages of high-fashion journals were evidence of the wider societal movement of Black Pride and the full expression of ‘Black is Beautiful.’ ”

This just gives you a glimpse into her history & imprint on the modeling & fashion industry. If you don't know much already, you should definitely try to learn more about this iconic woman.

Kerry Washington attended InStyle magazine's Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Benefit wearing a nude top from the Malandrino Spring 2009 collection. She paired the top with a gray skirt, metallic heels & a perfectly paired clutch. I really like the look & that's it not exactly how it appears on the runway. It's nice to see a different twist on what the designer chose for the runway.

Express celebrated their TXT L8R Denim Campaign in L.A. & spokeswoman Ciara sizzled in this red hot Marchesa jumpsuit from the Fall 2009 collection. While I do appreciate her being able to stand out in such an ensemble, I don't think the fit is right. It should come over her breast area just a little bit more then I think it would look just right.

Now as far as her hair & makeup, it looks fab. I think she looks gorgeous & fresh-faced with a peachy glow on her cheeks & a pale pink lip. So cute!

What Was She Thinking???

As many of you know I am a huge RHOA fan & I can't wait for the premiere tomorrow. But this picture of their party last night in Atlanta stopped me dead in my tracks. "What was she thinking?!" I thought, hence the title of this post. Sheree, Sheree, Sheree darling I don't know who told you that hairstyle was cute but it is just not a good look in my opinion.

While I do admire the "natural" state of her hair, I am appalled at the mess of it all! I would have rather heard another rendition of that tired song that man sang at her birthday party last season! Just doing a little too much & she should have taken it down a few notches.

If you've never head of Gilt Groupe, it's an online sample sale store that has the best accessories, clothing, & shoes from the likes of Rachel Roy, Kenneth Jay Lane, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, & so many more. I am addicted & have been for quite some time now. I just love the things I've scooped up for nearly half the price!
